An intelligent discussion on Evolution.

I came across what I can only describe as an intelligent discussion on evolution. It is long but worth reading the whole interview. The discussion with Dr. David Berlinski is free from much of the religious baggage that pervades current discourse on evolution in this country. I will be purchasing Dr. Berlinski's book, as well as renting Ben Stein's movie.

"You know, nothing is so apt to provoke the indignation of Darwinian biologists as to remark that the centerpiece of their theory is perfectly empty because it is, in fact, a trivial truth: whatever survives, survives. And Darwinian theory does not really get beyond que sera, sera. And there are all sorts of elaborate strategies designed to circumvent that objection, but whenever they’re investigated seriously, they always return to the same point of triviality. Darwinian biologists simply have nothing much better than what survives, survives. They’ll call it differential reproduction—namely, what survives, survives. This may be just a fact of life."

Versus Deum

Some Catholics may not be aware that the rubrics for the Mass of Pope Paul VI actually assume that the priest might be celebrating parts of Holy Mass facing the altar (towards God).

It is often erroneously believed that this posture is only appropriate if you are a throwback, medieval, cranky, backwards, Dark Ages, kook.

Well, the Holy Father continues to show us how the Extraordinary Form is reminding the Ordinary Form of its roots. Today, the Holy Father celebrated the Ordinary Form of the Roman Missal, "Versus Deum" using the Sistine Chapel's high altar!

Traditional Mass - Laconia 11/4/2007

Good news, if you haven't already heard.

Fr. Adrien, pastor at Sacred Heart, Laconia, has scheduled Mass with the 1962 Missal for Sunday, Nov. 4, at 3:00 PM. He plans to use the 1962 Missal for Mass every First Sunday of the month.

(The time of day for the Mass is somewhat flexible for future months after Nov., depending on feedback from parishioners.)

Polyphony/Chant Choir at St. Raphael's

St. Raphael's has started a chant/polyphony choir and will be singing the 5:00 pm Mass (Ordinary Form) on the last Sunday of each month. Respectful reverence due to divine worship isn't restricted to the Roman missal published by Blessed John XXIII in 1962. Everyone is welcome.

Padziernek reports: The next 1962 Extra-ordinary rite Mass will be Sunday September 30, 2007 2 PM at St. Patrick's in Nashua.

Diane-Marie reports: Fr. Kelly said he would like to have the 2nd Sunday of the month Extraordinary Form at 2pm and the 4th Sunday at 4pm. He will continue to publish times in bulletin, but is hoping for this schedule. Low Mass would most likely not have music. Fr. Kelly said that schedule depends on Baptisms, availability of servers, singers and musicians. He said to keep in mind that extraordinary celebrations might at times require extraordinary effort from everyone.

The Lord gave us a beautiful day to worship him at Immaculate Conception. Parking was at a premium... a very good sign.

My 3 year old saw the chapel veils and instantly wanted one.

Father Kerper offered the Holy Sacrifice with the great reverence that our Lord deserves. I especially appreciated the fact that Father wore a wireless microphone!

Though the altar rails were gone, kneelers worked very well. I hope that this practice makes its way back into the Novus Ordo.

My family and I made it to the celebration of the Extraordinary Form of the Latin Mass at St. Patrick's in Nashua, and it definitely was extraordinary.

I was a little concerned at first that the church wouldn't fill up, but by the time Mass started all of the pews were filled.

Father Kelly offered the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass with great devotion, and reverence. It was a High Mass unlike any I had participated in before. Other High Masses have been exercises in liturgical multi-tasking. In those speedy High Masses, the priest would clearly move along with Mass while the Choir sang. Consequently it was a pleasant surprise to realize that Father Kelly was waiting for the beautiful Gregorian Chants to finish before continuing with the Mass. It was very easy to follow along, and the 2 hours didn't feel like 2 hours at all! The only thing that would have made it easier to follow would have been a wireless microphone on Father.

Some people have estimated that there were 600 in attendance, others were claiming 800, while others were thinking 1000. I took a pic at the end of Mass, but you must note that this won't include those that left right after communion (yes, it happens at any Mass).

The Latin Mass in the Extraordinary Form will likely be celebrated every other week at St. Patrick's, but that has not been decided yet.

Why the Mass should be beautiful

We want the liturgy to be beautiful, attractive, inspiring, transcendent... but to what end?

The Holy Father helps us come to the correct answer.

"In all our efforts on behalf of the liturgy, the determining factor must always be our looking to God. We stand before God – he speaks to us and we speak to him. Whenever in our thinking we are only concerned about making the liturgy attractive, interesting and beautiful, the battle is already lost. Either it is Opus Dei, with God as its specific subject, or it is not."

Personally, I find it easy to forget this.

Latin Mass according to the Roman Missal of 1962 will
be celebrated on Sunday, September 23rd at 11:00 AM at Immaculate Conception
Church, 98 Summer Street in downtown Portsmouth.

"In response to requests and in keeping with the motu
propria of Pope Benedict XVI, we will celebrate the
11:00am Mass according to the 1962 Roman Missal of
Blessed John XXIII. Please note that this form is
very different from the standard celebration of the
Eucharist with which everyone is accustomed.

At 10:40am we will have an orientation during which
the major differences will be explained, responses
introduced and practiced, and some music rehearsed.
Please try to come early so that you won't be taken by surprise.

Because I have never celebrated Mass in this form, it
may take somewhat longer than usual.

In a separate blurb in the bulletin, Father Kerper
requested volunteers for altar servers, sacristans,
etc. Altar servers must learn the Latin responses.

THE EXTRAORDINARY FORM OF THE MASS ACCORDING TO THE MISSAL OF BLESSED JOHN XXIII
In response to several requests, the extraordinary form of Mass according to the Missal of Blessed John XXIII will be celebrated here at St. Patrick on Sunday, September 16, at 4:00 P.M. Bishop McCormack is aware both of the requests and the celebration that has been scheduled in response to those requests. The frequency and times of future celebrations are matters that will be worked out in the weeks ahead as we continue to implement the Holy Father's motu proprio under Bishop McCormack's guidance. Celebrations of Mass under this form will NOT conflict with the regular Mass schedule that will continue as always.

EVENING OF INFORMATION ON CELEBRATION OF THE MASS ACCORDING TO THE MISSAL OF BLESSED JOHN XXIII
Anyone interested in learning more about the Mass as it was celebrated before the Second Vatican Council is invited to attend a session to be held on Tuesday, September 11, at 7:00 P.M. in the parish center.

As we get closer to September 14, we have yet to hear anything more from the Cathedral regarding the Traditional Mass. [Actually, I was informed this weekend, that a recent article in the Union Leader said that our bishop is giving all parishes his encouragement. Viva His Excellency! If anyone has access to the article, please email me.] I guess that this shouldn't be that big of an issue since the Holy Father really puts it on the laity to do the hard work. Public celebrations will occur only if there are continuous groups of parishioners who request the Mass.

For this reason, I think that it is imperative that we charitably ask our pastors for the Traditional Mass. This would mean that registered parishioners need to individually ask our priests. If your parish has any co-pastors, be sure to talk to them also. I also encourage you to seek out others in your own parish who would like the Traditional Mass. The more parishes, the better. If there are enough people in your parish, there should be no reason to drive 2 hours from Hanover to Nashua.

Una Voce has posted some good advice on how to request the Mass. I would like to change it a bit.

The big picture.
1. Register if you want the Traditional Mass (REMEMBER - If you regularly attend another parish, say an indult Traditional Mass in MA, you can still register at a local parish).
2. Engage in a friendly conversation with your priest. Be brief and clear. "Hi Father, my family and I would really like to attend the Traditional Mass here. Father Doe says that he has been practicing and would like to offer it here. What else can we do to help you carry out the Holy Father's intention?"

Cathedral backtracking???

I recommend that everyone get a copy of today's Union Leader (Monday July 30, 2007). Kathryn Marchocki has written a very informative piece regarding the Traditional Mass in NH.

I will probably comment more on the article later, but I can't let go of one quote.

The Rev. Edward J. Arsenault, speaking in his capacity as administrator of the diocese...[clarified] the impression held by some Catholics that a Latin [sic - both the 1962 and the 1970 are Latin Missals] Mass would be celebrated at St. Joseph Cathedral.

"Bishop McCormack has not decided to have the 1962 missal at St. Joseph Cathedral. I'm aware that there are some people speculating (about that)," Arsenault said.

Wow! What is going on over there? We should pray for our bishop, Father Arsenault, and Father Cooper. If you would like to keep up on the St. Joseph bulletins, don't be fooled by the Acrobat Reader logo. These documents need to be saved to your computer and then opened using WordPad or Microsoft Word. If you are on an Apple/Mac machine, feel free to comment on what app works for you.

Learn Latin like a 5 year old.

I would like to pass along this little gem that we have at home, Prima Latina. Prima Latina is a Latin course for K-3.

We watch 2 classes on the DVD about once a week. One review class and one new one. We're not using workbooks, just watching the disc in a laid back manner. The children like it and so do we. I like that Latin prayers are part of each class.

For those that care, this course teaches Church Latin. Everyone always says that Latin is dead and not used anymore, so you might as well learn how to speak it the way it is still spoken, right?

Do yourselves a favor and at least get the DVDs. You will learn slowly but you won't regret it.

The Bookstore at Ste. Marie's is carrying Baronius Press' Daily Roman Missal 1962. Baronius Press is currently getting a Motu Propio edition ready for publication on September 14... but if you don't mind not having Summorum Pontificum in your Missal, give Ste. Marie's a call.

I have my copy and it is proving immensely useful. It has more than just the Order of Mass, it also has traditional Catholic prayers, hymns, and more! Plus, don't forget that our priests aren't the only ones that need to practice, we need to do our part as well.

The bookstore is open Monday through Friday from 10 am to 5 pm, Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm and the 2nd Sunday of the month from 10 am to 2 pm.

Dear friends in Christ,

Viva il Papa! Summorum Pontificum has been the answer to many of our prayers.
The response to my initial e-mail has been amazing. Not only have many of my fellow parishioners gotten in contact with me, but e-mails have come in from all over the state, expressing interest in the celebration of the Mass of all time.

There is good news! It would seem that the Traditional Mass may arrive at our Cathedral. Deo Gratias! How truly fitting that this Mass should be celebrated at the principal Church. Let us pray that the bishop's parish inspires other parishes to follow its example. I scanned in the Cathedral bulletin and published it at http://www.relivethemiracle.com/stjosephmotupropio.pdf (For some reason the bulletins on the Cathedral website do not seem to work).

If anyone would like to send me verifiable information about other Traditional Masses around the state, I will post it here.
